Solving problems together: Every day, my team and I have the opportunity to solve problems in collaboration with a broad range of stakeholders and then see the solutions come to life. I’ve had the chance to play a part in trialling changes to our drill and blast practices to improve wall control, and developed a number of mining plans and sequences that optimise production.

Supportive leaders: My leaders have been supportive of my career growth and have been great to learn from.

Influencing ideas: Since working for Evolution, I have noticed a real culture of striving for continuous improvement. The people and leadership are open to trying new ways of doing things to get a positive result and I have found it much easier here to influence positive change than in previous roles.

Career growth: I feel supported in my career goals since starting here, evidenced by the fact that I have been fortunate enough to have been promoted to Senior Mining Engineer since starting.

Lifestyle highlight

Connected family: Since moving to West Wyalong, my young family has settled in well and established a great routine. I’ve been able to enjoy being home with the kids every night and get involved in some local sport. My wife and I are from NSW originally, so it’s been great to move closer to family and friends and be able to see them more easily.

Role highlight

Exposure: In my role I get to partner with different people and departments across the business and learn about their day-to-day processes. I am grateful to be part of a team that wants to succeed and see the business do well.

Diverse experiences: I joined Evolution in 2021 as part of the Graduate Program. I had the opportunity to do a rotation both on site and in our Sydney Office which allowed me to work with a number of people in different departments and make strong networks. Being exposed to a diverse range of experiences and projects within my role has allowed me to continue to develop in my career and has been a huge highlight for me.

Family connections: Being able to have weekends off to play sport or drive home on my long weekends to see my family has been great.

Exposure: My current role has provided exposure to a diverse range of environmental aspects specific to the mining operation within north-west Queensland.

Balance: Working a FIFO roster has ensured a balance between my working career and my personal wellbeing. I have been able to foster strong work connections whilst making the most of my time away from work. FIFO work has helped my lifestyle by creating opportunities for short, well-deserved adventures during my days off. FIFO has allowed me to experience parts of Queensland that I would never been able to on a 9-5 job!

See more. Do more: My time at Ernest Henry has been very busy, transitioning from working with an offshore support team and global IT systems to an Australian-based group. Whilst my journey has been challenging, this transition has provided growth opportunities and exposure to end-to-end operations I would otherwise have been isolated from in a larger organisation.

Career growth with flexibility:During my short time with Evolution, I have had the opportunity to progress through three roles and taken an extended period of parental leave. I appreciate the flexibility I was granted on my return to work and the career opportunities I have been provided despite my absence from the business.

Family connection: Living locally in Cloncurry and having the ability to travel home each day has helped in maintaining a healthy work life balance, particularly with a young family.

Exposure: Highlights working at Ernest Henry have been the exposure to multiple different areas of engineering. From project to maintenance engineering and reliability, if you show initiative and can communicate the added value, no one will say no to an idea or proposal. We also work closely with the maintenance department and the relationship between the engineers and the maintenance crews is one of the best I’ve seen.

Agility: Evolution is a younger and smaller miner, founded in 2011. However, this gives them the flexibility and agility to adapt and have a larger impact in the overall business than can often be achieved in the larger mining operations.

Lifestyle highlight

Flexibility: Working an 8 days on/6 days off roster, where we travel in work time, makes life easy. I really enjoy the work life balance and the work flexibility. Having the option to do a two weeks on and two weeks off roster or work overtime when permitted makes working here very flexible. Additionally, camp is great and probably one of the best I’ve seen.

Culture: The highlights for me have been the community environment, the going above and beyond mentality and living by the company values of Safety, Respect, Excellence and Accountability.

Progression: The progression opportunities and wealth of knowledge that I have learnt during my time here have been a career highlight for me.

Commute: The Sunshine Coast is an easy commute home on the weekend. Travel to and from work is along really nice country roads.

Relationships: Working at a small site encourages closer working relationships and forges lifelong friendships. My role is diverse and different every day which keeps it fresh and challenging.

Opportunities: I have had some great opportunities in my time here. Mungari 4.2 will be a real game changer and it’s very exciting to be part of it.

Progression: I started as a contract electrician at Frogs Leg in 2008, signed over in 2011 and have had the opportunity to move through more senior roles. Before my current role, I was Superintendent Electrical for the underground maintenance team. This new role is a whole new learning for me and it’s an exciting challenge.

Family connection: Going home to my family every night is great.

Role highlight

Diverse operations: I really like that Mungari has both open pit and underground operations. It’s different to anywhere I’ve worked in the past in terms of how spread out and vast the assets are. The learning experience since commencing has been immense and, for someone like me who loves a challenge, it’s the place to be!

Career highlight

Stepping up: Evolution gave me the opportunity to step up into the Superintendent role and test my skills. The Superintendents I used to look after have been very supportive. They encouraged me to take on the role and provide great guidance on how to do well. Although I have only been with Evolution for a year, I feel that there have been solid relationships built, and the laughs and shared successes (as well as the not so fun parts of work) will push us forward to achieve greater things.

Living highlight

Best of both worlds: Although I work FIFO, with Mungari operations being between Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie, I do feel that I get the best of both worlds. I enjoy FIFO as I get to focus wholly on work when I am on site. I like that Mungari has a mix of residential and FIFO – it makes for a unique working experience.

Building teams: A highlight for me is building towards a high-performing team, developing processes and delivering site programs.

Career highlight

All round experience: Working at Evolution has been an excellent experience for me. It has allowed me to enhance my skills, learn new things, and grow professionally and personally. I am proud of what I have accomplished here and I look forward to continuing to contribute to Red Lake’s success.

Local focus: Living in Red Lake has enabled me to concentrate on my work, pursue my outdoor hobbies and reduce travel.

People matter: I like the focus given on humans and the foremost importance given to family matters. I feel trusted and not pressurized by management am (although having sometimes difficulties to communicate properly, English being my second language).

Career growth: I like the exposition and effort to train people so that they grow and become more confident and accountable.

Career opportunity: Evolution has given me an international career opportunity. I have been exposed to complex and challenging working environments (high-stress mining, high seismicity) which is forging another facet in my career that I didn’t have, and I have yet to reach my full potential.

Living highlight

Prioritising family: Having worked seven years on a FIFO in my previous role, I was seeking a better lifestyle spending daily time with my family, strengthening the family bond and being available every day for my children. Being a family man, I am happier and more balanced working residential.

Site visits: I have particularly enjoyed visiting the sites, meeting the Geotech teams and continuing to build relationships with all the Geotechs though MS Teams catchups. We have hard working, good people in our Geotech teams whose range of experience is invaluable to Evolution.

Career highlight

Influence: Evolution has given me the platform to positively influence new Geotechs coming into mining as well as be the “outside looking in” and identifying potential for optimisation and innovation at our operations. This is a huge responsibility and I appreciate the challenge.

Lifestyle highlight

Flexibility: The flexible work arrangement has allowed me to have the best of all worlds. I chat to sites daily, visit them often, and we meet with the rest of the T&E in Sydney every month. This means I can be home with my child while my husband works a FIFO roster. My manager is very accommodating and understanding which makes me value this opportunity even more.

Career highlight

My 8 years with Evolution have been full of lots of different personal and professional development opportunities and I’ve been able to progress my career while raising two children. The biggest highlight for me was when I was working onsite and the opportunity to develop personally. I had some great managers that recognised my natural leadership attributes and encouraged me to develop these qualities. It was rewarding working in a leadership role and being in a position to offer development opportunities to my team.
